Ty Gardner
Ty Gardner – Candidate for Full-time VP at Ventura College
I am a full-time faculty member in the biology department, hired in 2009, and would appreciate the opportunity to serve you as the full-time VP at Ventura College. In my time at VC I had the opportunity to learn about other programs on campus as a member of the Academic Senate and College Planning Council. I was one of the first SLO coordinators and sought to make the process a simple as possible at a time when it was new and, to be honest, unwelcome. I’ve had the opportunity to work with members of the administration to accomplish common goals and to oppose them when they sought to harm faculty, including the filing of a grievance against an unethical dean who committed multiple contractual violations during my own tenure process. In 2018/2019 I represented faculty on the Health Benefits Committee. In Fall 2019 I joined the AFT 1828 Executive Council when selected to fill the vacant position of secretary. These experiences have led me to seek this opportunity to represent you on the Executive Council.
My goal in serving you is to produce a stronger, more unified AFT that listens to its members and speaks clearly to them. I believe that a strong AFT can protect us during the COVID-19 crisis and improve our pay and working conditions as the state emerges from the COVID-associated economic downturn. Listed below are my priorities should you select me as your representative.

- Increase the quantity and quality of communication between the AFT and its members
- See the current negotiations process through, seeking the best outcome for our facu
- Prepare now for our next negotiation so that we may enter negotiations from a position of strength and achieve a settlement that respects faculty
- Develop member-contact lists
- Recruit new members
- Engage in regular communication with members
- Discuss goals, recognize member strengths, and plan actions
- Promote unity within the AFT between campuses, between FT and PT faculty (my wife is a PT instructor), and between programs on campus while recognizing the diversity with the AFT membership.
