Part-Time Evaluations - August 30, 2019
10:30am-12:15 pm Our long serving VP for P/T instructors at Moorpark College, Renee Fraser, has offered this informative training on several occasions. The purpose is to go over the best practices that give you an opportunity to be placed on the preferred list. Even if you are on this list already….Administrators change and instructors may lose their status when a new evaluator arrives. If you are being evaluated this semester this is a must attend class.
Load Banking and other Underutilized Assignment Options for Full Time Faculty - September 27,2019
11am-noon This first time offering will cover an eclectic range of methods available for full-time faculty that can allow load banking classes that can result in taking a semester off with pay! Additionally, it will cover the overload teaching opportunities that can be used to provide a supplemental retirement fund and it will also cover the “pre-retirement” schedule that you can take advantage of before you transition into full retirement. This will provide important information for both new and senior faculty. Our VP for F/T faculty at Moorpark (and new Social Sciences Dept Chair), Hugo Hernandez by interacting with a subject matter Alan Hitachi (AFT 1828 former Budget Analyst).
Department Chair Forum - November 1, 2019
11am-12:45pm This is a new offering that will allow union members who are also Department Chairs a chance to share information. Especially as it involves contract issues, best practices and ways to mentor faculty. We have three AFT Executive Council members who are Department Chairs that will also participate in providing ways you can appropriately use your influence to encourage non member faculty to appreciate the benefits of union membership. Additionally, there are times when management has sought to overwhelm Department Chairs with extra assignments and this can be shared and solutions discussed. This forum will allow for the free engagement of ideas and an open range of concerns that will be mutually beneficial.
Unemployment Benefits - December 6, 2019
11am -12:45pm. One of our most popular AFT 1828 training sessions. Our VP for P/T Instructors at Ventura College, David Carey, has helped scores of P/T instructors learn how to master the online process to access unemployment benefits per the Cervisi Decision. This landmark decision allows a P/T instructor to collect unemployment during the periods between contracts. Even if a contract has been offered, there is “no guarantee” that it will be honored. Low enrollment might occur. Therefore during these periods you are eligible for unemployment benefits. Many persons who just teach P/T substantially augment their annual income with this important tool. David walks you through the steps and is able to answer a wide array of questions on how best to obtain approval.
