NATHAN COLE
SECRETARY - CANDIDATE STATEMENT
I am both humbled and excited by the possibility and opportunity to support the membership by serving on the executive council of AFT 1828. I understand firsthand the effort it takes to defend and improve compensation and working conditions for present and future members. As a professional theatre director on union productions, I see the immense potential we possess as a governing body to create change in this district, yet feel somehow this has been overlooked these past few years due to the many natural disasters we continue to face as a community.
If elected secretary, I pledge to establish more inclusive and frequent communication that reflects twenty-first century technologies to allow broader participation from our constituency to produce a more influential voice. I will use the skills I have learned leading numerous committees at both the district and campus levels at two distinctly different institutions, along with those I acquired through my many years as a director and producer, to introduce stronger organization into our chapter to create more beneficial outcomes when pushing for decisions that reflect our shared goals and values. I promise to make choices as an executive officer that will positively affect our everyday work environments and place faculty and students at the forefront of the ever-changing landscape within education. Most important, I vow to speak truth to power and change our collective story from where we currently find ourselves. I will engage management in tough conversations and ask difficult questions to achieve our objectives when the district pushes its inequitable agenda. I will continue to advocate for solidarity amongst faculty and encourage greater participation amongst new, former, and existing members.
It is truly my hope to foster an environment where faculty feel empowered to no longer tolerate abuse and disrespect from our leaders, to no longer feel it necessary follow behind managers with a dust pan and broom cleaning up the destruction left behind due to continued incompetence. In the face of defeat over contract negotiations during a global pandemic, I promise to never give up on our collective mission. Counselors, faculty, and librarians are the frontline workers on any campus. We are the first faces students see when they enter our doors and the ones they remember long after they leave. We are the face of the district and we must never allow management and its leaders to forget this.
